Anne at the shore

Anne at the Shore by

I was driving home with bags of groceries when I saw Anne Frank hitchhiking. I stopped, and she got in. We drove in silence until I asked, “Where would you like to go?”

            She said, “To the sea.”

We reached the beach as the sun was setting. Anne Frank got out and walked to the water’s edge. She opened a plaid notebook and page after page floated out, silver against the darkening sky. She looked skyward with a small, sweet, glowing smile. An ominous cloud blotted out the sun, and then she was gone. All that remained were her black shoes.

I ran after the silver, floating pages, hoping to save them all.
