Cracked Egg by Tara Watkins
I cracked open an egg, and an eyeball fell out.
All I wanted was to make breakfast, and now, here I am, staring at an eye, in an egg, in a pan, and I’m wondering if it was me that fractured when my shell hit the countertop.
I’ve had enough blunt-force trauma, and I’ve finally cracked up– just goo in the bottom of a hot, Teflon nightmare.
Do I leap and risk fire, or do I bubble and fry? It will burn either way, but at least I’ll be delicious in the pan.
“What are you doing?”
I flinched, coming back to myself, back to my breakfast.
He told me, “You have to turn on the gas if you want that to cook.”
