Goliath’s Kitchen by Josh Parker
Dust motes floated like ghostly satellites, cupboards rose like city blocks and there he stood amongst it all, deep in the shadow of the pink skinned giant. His mission that day had taken him across the expanse of the kitchen in search of debris from the titan’s last feast.
One of the colony’s older scouts, he was trusted to return with sustenance for their aching queen who any day now, would deliver the next generation of soldiers and workers that, with any luck, might bring around an early retirement. This was until he found himself face to face with their gigantic neighbour who up to now knew nothing of his existence. His aged body throbbed from the slow clamber down off the kitchen top.
Looking up at the casually dressed deity, with its muscly, fleshy features, tired mandibles burned, his woes imperceptible to the skyward eyes of the rugged mammal. The wrinkled face of the colossus creased at the sight of the miniature scout, a mere speck in a sea of beige lamination.
Much further below, the scavenger pondered a dash to the dark space beneath the fridge, but if training had taught him anything, he didn’t fancy being wrapped in ropes of cobwebs, his head in the gaping maw of barbarians that called such places home.
His survival odds seemed better off in whatever fate the giant decided so waited for its deliverance. Rows of monolithic toes on either side rolled in the confines of thick white socks, now faded and stained by the day’s wear.
Standing his ground, he remained, shadowed in place, on the vast plain of the cold kitchen floor.
